Marc: ‘Calimero performed very well in Tryon’

The WEG in Tryon has come to an end for Sterrehof’s Calimero and Marc. Two jumping faults in the very difficult first round of the individual final barred the way to the top twelve in the second and decisive round. After a fifth place with the Dutch team earlier in the week our combination now finishes individually on 18^th spot. A nice result given the 125 participating combinations at the WEG. This classification is also the best Dutch result of this championship, which is a nice statistic but nothing more than that, acknowledges Marc. ‘No, that is not of importance to me’, he says afterwards. ‘I have mixed feelings about this tournament. We would have liked to win something with the team but were actually already out of the game after the second day. And regarding our individual performance I think Calimero jumped fantastically again today but especially the first fault was a bit inexplicable to me. That was a shame.’

Not tired

On the bright side, the still only eleven years old Calimero showed a great form during the whole championship, something Marc confirms. ‘He actually jumped super every day. He had no problems with the heavy conditions over here, did not feel tired at all and would be able to compete again tomorrow, figuratively speaking. It is really positive that Calimero can handle such a heavy championship. He has also gained more experience when I compare it with the Europeans last year and that experience can only grow in the coming years.’

Olympic qualification

It will still take some time and a lot can happen but who knows they can benefit from it during the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Marc and Calimero have already contributed in qualifying for this event in 2020. Marc: ‘The qualification for the Games was a serious goal. If you see how many good countries did not make it, it is very positive that we have succeeded!’
